2021 Season
While this season looked different, FIRST and 4488 were confident the new team-based opportunities would allow our participants to have a fulfilling season, as we continued to execute the mission of FIRST and inspire the next generation of our future science and technology leaders, the same mission that has guided us for more than 9 years.
Thanks to all students and mentors outstanding dedication during this difficult time and our wonderful Sponsors, we had a successful competition season where we won the top award and are world finalists in the Game Design Challenge.
The FRC 2020 21 Season, called FIRST GAME CHANGERS powered by Star Wars: Force for Change. FIRST offered different ways teams could compete and we choose one that would allow any student interested to participate, even without being allowed at school: 2021 FRC Game Design Challenge.
For this competition teams had to design a game, similar to the ones we play. This involved lots of brainstorming, sharing and listening to ideas, and teamwork. We also created a criteria table of what the game should have such as fun for spectators as well for teams, easy to scout, open vision for drivers, easy to find parts and field-building at schools, a game any level team could play and enjoy, etc. The team included a table with strategies on how teams would play the game and a table of scoring possibilities. It was a very complex challenge that allowed us to teach the skills we love so much.
The CHAIN REACTION game, created by Team 4488, celebrates scientists who show the perseverance and ingenuity to solve the world's biggest challenges. The goal in designing this game is to encourage the love and exploration of science and honor those scientists.
Team Shockwave is proud to have received the top award: 2021 Boron Group Game Design Challenge Designer's Award: It celebrates a team's outstanding success with the Game Design Challenge. The winner of this award should be a strong candidate for some other awards in this challenge. This award qualified the Team to advance to the second round of the Game Design Challenge, where we compete with the Designer's Award and the Concept Award winners from the other Groups.
Shockwave was then selected as one of the twenty Game Design Challenge Finalists out of nearly 1400 submissions, to compete in front of the Game Design committee!
